Hurricane Season in Florida: Are You Prepared?

Hurricane season in Florida lasts from June 1st to November 30th. This year, forecasters are predicting an above-normal hurricane season. Are you prepared?

Hurricanes can be scary, and preparing for them is quite stressful. It should be a seamless process if you start preparing a plan ahead of time.

How To Prepare For A Hurricane

Plan Ahead

Your first step should be to make a plan. Sit down with your family and discuss what you would do in the event of a hurricane. Decide on a safe place to go and make sure everyone knows how to get there independently, just in case you aren’t able to communicate when a hurricane hits.

Include your pets in your plan; they’re part of the family too!

Prepare Emergency Kits

Next, gather emergency kits for your home and car. These kits should include items like:

  • Non-perishable food
  • Water
  • A first-aid kit
  • A flashlight
  • Extra batteries
  • Extra clothing for everyone in the family

Is Your City Under Hurricane Watch Or Hurricane Warning?

Make sure your family knows the difference between a hurricane watch and a warning. A hurricane watch means that conditions are favorable for a hurricane to form within the next 48 hours.

A hurricane warning means that a hurricane is expected within the next 36 hours. If you receive a hurricane warning, it is important to take action immediately and evacuate if necessary.

Make Sure Your Vehicle Is In Good Condition

If you live in an area that is prone to flooding, make sure your car is in good condition so that you can evacuate if necessary. Fill up your gas tank and check your tires to ensure they are properly inflated.

Familiarize yourself with the route you would take to evacuate, and make sure you know where all the evacuation routes are.

Pack Your Bags! Even If You Don’t End Up Needing Them

Make sure each family member has a packed bag with all the essentials, including clothes, medications, important documents, and pet supplies, if applicable. If you have babies, make sure you have copies of their birth certificates and any other important documents they may need.
